Merissa Mann’s recent series, “Aftermath”, envisions an alternative near-future where science fiction humanoids struggle to reclaim the earth after the devastating effects of global climate change. Ms. Mann imbues her premonitory works with a heightened sense of drama and surrealist absurdity. Vibrant reds and deep blues pulse in her gouache paintings while pure black dominates her high contrast charcoals. In her work “Natural Disaster”, an egg laiden cyborg walks through uneven terrain in platform shoes while in “Abyss” three woefully small divers try to capture a hulking angler fish. Ms. Mann utilizes her background as a costume designer to create many of the original creatures that inhabit her twisted landscapes and seascapes.
